Prairie Mill Bread Co.
Prairie Mill Bread Co. has been a part of the Riverbend Gardens CSA from the start and we’re thrilled that they’re a pickup location for 2014. If you’ve tried any bread from these folks, you know that they’re amazing bakers but they’re also amazing people. We stopped by before sunrise last month to ask Owen some questions and to take some photos of the magic that happens here while most of us are still sleeping.Q. Tell us about yourself! A. Prairie Mill Bread is open 6am-6pm Tuesday thru Saturday 14253-23 Ave Edmonton. We have been baking bread from stone ground flour that we mill on site for over five years in Edmonton. You can also find cinnamon buns, cookies and the odd muffin at the bakery with a large selection of The Jam Lady’s preserves. if you do not make it to the bakery you can come get bread from us all year long at City Market on Saturdays and Salisbury Market in Sherwood Park every Thursday evening. A few grocery stores regularly carry Prairie Mill bread so look for it at Earth’s General Store, Blush Lane, and Planet Organic or have it delivered to your door thru The Organic Box. Q. Tell us something we don’t know about you or something we wouldn’t expect about you, your staff or your work. A. I’m flattered that you think we’re so interesting as to have unknown fun facts about how we work! we just bake all morning whilst sipping coffee by the pint. Q. What do you offer that pairs best with CSA veggies and what is your favourite CSA veggie? A. Bread is a staple so pairs nicely with other staples. a slice of Nine Grain with a thick veggie soup (full of onions.. i love onion) sounds like pure comfort food! Q. What led you to partner with Riverbend Gardens CSA? A. I first connected with RBG at City Market where we are both vendors and with the bakeries south west location it was a natural partnership for the CSA. Q. How many seasons have you partnered with Riverbend Gardens CSA? A. This will be the third season that Prairie Mill with host the RBG CSA. Q. Why is it important to you to be a part of the Riverbend Gardens CSA? A. CSA programs are a very effective, sustainable, and ethical way of getting fresh local food to the dinner table. It is also a relationship based system that relies on continual interaction between the farmer and the customers. Hosting the RBG CSA is a great opportunity for the bakery to support healthy and ethical diets in our neighborhood.
